Burke and Stowe

When we went back to Burke, we were going to see them fly in the new lift towers but the helicopter did not show up so we didn't get to see anything happen. We then went to burke later that week, when we went their we actually had to work. We had to Clear up the Drainage Ditches on the access road. We then went to the summit to check out the newly completed terminal. We also got to check out the newly completed Ski patrol hut at the top, after that we mulched the area under the newly completed lift before they were going to blow snow. After doing work we went to the maintenance building and checked out their new groomers that they had purchased. And ten we got to check out the park features that they have which was sick.

Burke and Chili Cook Off

When we went to Burke we were told that we were going to have to put the seat pads on the old quad that goes to the summit. Usually they only have about 3 people doing this and it would have taken them about 1-2 days to put all of them on, but with our class of 18 kids we were able to put all of the pads on in just over an hour and a half, all because we had a system on how to put them on. Later that week we had the 2nd anual Chili cook off, which went well. the small little games and such made a lot of money and so did the people that bought chili. We also had a skate jam that day as well which was a little disappointing because their were only 5 competitors in the jam but it brought a large crowd.

Bretton Woods

On our trip to Bretton Woods we got to meet the Ski Services Manager, he told us a lot about how he got into the industry and the history of Bretton woods. He also gave us a tour of the base lodge, which is a great lodge and the had just put in a new indoor rock wall for the guests. We then took a walk to the maintenace building to get a better understanding about their snowmaking and if they were going to make snow that night. After that we walked over to one of the lifts where we got to meet the Mountain Ops Manager, who told us about how she got into the industry and how long she's been working their, she also told us a little bit about the lifts that they have. We then went back into the lodge to learn more about Customer Services and how every part of a ski area is a part of Customer Service. We then took a shuttle over to their Hotel which was incredible, I've never seen anything like it before and how old it was was amazing. It was pretty cool to learn that Thomas Edison was the person to do all the electricity in the hotel. As we were leaving we looked up the mountain to see that they were making snow, which was a great thing to see.

I herd that they got to see the new indoor water park that Jay is putting in. this water park that they put in has the longest indoor lazy river in the United States.

Burke Trip

When we were at the Lyndon Outing Club we got to see what the ski hill had in the basement, in the maintenance shed and other areas around the Lyndon Outing Club.On our Burke Trip that we have taken we went to Mid-Burke and we checked out the plans for what the new lift will look like, we also check out the master plan that they had and it showed a lot of work that they want to do over the next 10 years or so. The lift that they are putting in is a Poma and it will be a top drive lift. Burke is not very far along with the build of their new lift, they are only at the concrete stage in the process. After checking out where the top terminal will be we went and saw their new wind turbine that they now have at the top of Burke.

Cannon Trip

On our trip to Cannon our sole purpose was to go visit the New England Ski Museum. When we got to the museum the pictures of the ski lifts, snowmaking, and the groomers that they had. The museum was full of different trophies, clothing, and all different types of skis. Their were skis that looked like they were the first ski ever skied, and their was one probably for every year after their oldest ski. After checking out the old equipment that was used we then went and say a power point about the history of skiing in New England, and how they cut trails out. After checking out the museum we then took the Tram up to the top of Cannon where we went out to the observation tower but it was too windy and rainy to be out their for very long. We ended the day with a tram ride down to the base.

Stowe Trip

When we went to Stowe for class we ended up checking out their new Dopplemayr lift that is almost complete. Stow is putting a new high speed quad that goes the full length of the mountain. When we went to Stowe the lift towers were complete and placed on the hill already, the top terminal was half way through being complete and the bottom terminal was just about done. Stow is also putting a building in next to the lift to house the lift chairs on days that will be extremely cold and snowy and icy so they dont have to take off the snow and ice from them. After checking out the new lift we went back to the base and helped the mountain ops at Stowe dismantle the old lift towers that they had taken down to put the new lift up. In the end it was a pretty sweet trip to Stowe.

NEWSS Conference

At the conference I went around to a lot of the vendors that were their. I went to Chairkid ski lifts, I spoke to Maynard Russell. The ski lifts that they make have had more sales in Europe that any where else in the world. Their about 400 of their lifts in Europe and about 40 in the US. I then went and saw that reliable racing was their so I spent some time talking to John Jacobs the president of Reliable Racing. I talked to him for a while about what new stuff they have and how much better it is. Patti Dykman is the office manager at Leitner Poma headquarters. She was telling us that they are putting in 9 new lifts this year. After that I went to a Booth for bracelets, but they are not ordinary bracelets. these Bracelets by EFX are specially designed to make you more balanced while doing anything. CB Vaughn works in the Business Development department for EFX, they are trying to use the bracelets that have RFID chips in them to be the season passes for resorts to increase the simplicity of ticket sales. One of the last people I went to see was Chris Rousseau from NSP or National Ski Patrol. I also went to a seminar on RFID cards,  the speaker was Mike Bisner. He explained that the RFID cards can be placed in a pocket all season with no need to pull it out every time you go to a lift. The RFID cards can maximize your resorts revenue, switch lifts on different days, and also have different access times and areas. Their slogan "One network, One partner", with their new FOS software it can take care of most of the sales at the resort like ticketing, reservations, retail, food, and rental. The NEWSS Conference was pretty cool and I wouldn't mind going back another time.

First day at a ski area

First day at a ski area was awesome. Learned about different scenarios that could take place at a ski are and what departments are used to make sure everything is ok at the ski area. Learned that our class is going to make the Lyndon Outing Club the best place for events and the best place to ski or ride. Our ideas might be stretching it a bit but with time the Lyndon Outing Club will be a great place to go and ski or ride.
